Nirmala violated mandate: Renuka

New Delhi.March 1.-

The government removed Nirmala Venkatesh as a member of the National Commission for Women as she violated her mandate, Minister of State for Women and Child Development Renuka Chowdhury has said.

“There is a clear mandate given to the Commission and violation of that attracts removal,” Ms. Chowdhury told journalists here on Saturday.

The decision was taken after the full Commission recommended the move and rejected Ms. Venkatesh’s report on the Mangalore pub incident. “It is unfortunate because commissions are set up with a defined mandate. But these situations do arise in a system and would be set right soon,” the Minister said.

Ms. Venkatesh, who had headed a three-member team, blamed pub owners for not providing adequate security to women guests. She had not spoken to victims because she said she could not trace them. Instead, she met the offenders in jail. Also, Ms. Venkatesh made her findings public even before she submitted the report to the Commission. Welcoming Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha L.K. Advani’s remarks that the Mangalore attack was unfortunate, Ms. Chowdhury said he showed respect to the victims but such incidents were still happening in Karnataka. On Sri Ram Sene announcing its decision to lodge a defamation suit against those involved in the “Pink Chaddi” campaign, Ms. Chowdhury said if the outfit felt hurt, it was equally important to respect the women and young girls who had gone to the Mangalore pub on January 24.

Indian officials have expressed skepticism about Pakistan pledges to cooperate in the investigation.

Terrorist camps in Pakistan still active: Indian Army commander

Jammu : 16 th Jan.

Stating that militant incursions from across the border in Kashmir had come down considerably, a senior Indian Army commander on Thursday said terrorists training camps were, however, still active in Pakistan.

"There are about 800 terrorists active in Jammu and Kashmir and different (terror) organisations are inter-linked," Lt.Gen. P.C. Bhardwaj, the General Officer Commanding in Chief (GOC-in-C) of the Northern Command, told reporters.

Bhardwaj was speaking to the media at Akhnoor near Jammu on the occasion of Army Day. He said the militant groups were coordinating their strikes.

Even though the infiltration of militants from Pakistan across the Line of Control (LOC) had considerably come down but "a number of terrorists training camps are still active in Pakistan", he said.
